PCU / Stepdown

Stepdown / PCU RN — Night Shift | Council Bluffs, IA

Contract: 18 weeks | Shift: 12-hour nights (1830–0700) | Guaranteed Hours: 36/week

About the Unit

This fast-paced stepdown/PCU unit manages a high volume of admissions and discharges, caring for patients with heart failure, atrial fibrillation, respiratory distress, and stroke. RNs are expected to work with autonomy and urgency in a team-oriented environment.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Titrate drips including Cardizem, amiodarone, and nitroglycerin
• Read and independently interpret telemetry strips
• Troubleshoot CPAP equipment as needed
• Charge nurses are present each shift and carry a full patient assignment
• Patient care techs provide additional support on the unit

Scheduling

• Every other weekend required
• 1 major and 1 minor holiday per contract
• Cyclic scheduling (no self-scheduling)
• May float to ICU if clinically appropriate and experience supports it

Certifications Required

• BLS, ACLS, NIHSS

Orientation

• One 12-hour department-specific orientation shift
• Open-book skills exam during orientation; minimum passing score of 90% required

Additional Requirements

• Active RN license required at time of submission
• Artificial nails are not permitted in patient care areas
• Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility and must not hold concurrent employment (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any affiliated system facility
• All requested time off must be submitted upfront; no additional RTO will be approved post-submission
